The mission of Bethel Baptist Missions is
"To prayerfully spread the glory of God
among all peoples through the strategic
equipping, sending and going of disciples."

Equipping - Acts 13:2-3
"While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off."

As a missions ministry, we want to provide opportunities for our entire church to know why we do what we do, but more specifically, to provide training and support to those who are involved in the work that the Holy Spirit has called them to. As we select people, set them apart for missions work, we want to provide outlets for them to be equipped for service. This can happen through conferences, Bible studies, or leadership events. The focus is that people have the tools they need.

Sending - 3 John 6-8
"For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth."

We ought to be involved in sending people for "the sake of the name" into unreached parts of the world. We can involved in local missions, or national missions, but we must, absolutely must be involved in sending teams to the nations. This focus is particularly for those who are not going personally, but are sending. We have a responsibility to support teams prayerfully, financially, and equip them to go. The church is the sending agent of missionaries, not the International Mission Board by itself. We have to be active in being a sending agent, an airport for missionaries!

Going - Matthew 28: 19-20
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Believers are called to go. To be a healthy, New Testament church, we must be allowing people to go. We must not only allow it, we must encourage it! We must have strategic opportunities for them to carry the gospel to panta ta ethne, "all the nations". The church was not meant to be planted in one location, and sit, it was designed to be planted and have its roots spread out far and wide.

Rev. David Irwin - Associate Pastor of Discipleship & Missions

David David began his ministry at Bethel in March 2007.  He and his wife, Jamie, have been married twenty years and have eight children: Philip, Matthew, James, Grace, Lilly, Phoebe, Joshua, and Caleb.  He loves to spend time with his wife and family.  He has a heart for equipping families to grow and be nurtured by the Scriptures in a loving Christ-filled home.  He brings a strong desire to see Jesus’ name glorified here and abroad and that comes out in his heart for evangelism and missions.  David received his undergraduate degree from Old Dominion University and his Masters of Divinity with Biblical Languages from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

New York City ~ North West Africa ~ Buenos Aires, Argentina

New York City (March 2008)
Take part in reaching out to our nation's largest city with the gospel of grace and forgiveness that can only be found through relationship with Jesus Christ. In a city of over 16 million people, you will be able to minister alongside our partnering church, the 411NYC in Times Square. This trip will give you the unique opportunity to serve NYC residents as you share the love of Christ in various ways. Some of the things you'll be doing:

  • Prayer Walking
  • Servanthood Evangelism
  • Working with the homeless & less fortunate
  • Handing out literature about the church and upcoming events.
  • Talking and interacting with the countless number of people on the streets and at their church.

North West Africa (July 2008)
Be a part of the exciting things that are happening amongst our adoptive people group, the Jebala people of Northwest Africa. This is a great opportunity to minister among an unreached people group that desperately needs to know that salvation is found in no one other than Jesus (Acts 4:12), and that He came to seek and save them from their sins (Luke 19:10).

You will be blessed by these warm and generous people as you minister among them. Some of the things we have done in the past have been ministering to their physical needs (physicals and checkups), as well as helping their communities by painting schools, building fences, and other projects as well.

By investing in the lives of the Jebala people, and going back year after year, we have an excellent opportunity to begin and maintain relationships with the very people we want to see place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Buenos Aires, Argentina (October 2008)
In a city of over 13 million people, lies a neighborhood with no evangelical church. Our church will join numerous other Southern Baptist churches in Virginia in reaching "Barrio Coghlan" with the gospel of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Our church, along with the other churches will be THE Christian witness in this community as we go and take the gospel with us.

We will work alongside IMB missionaries and other churches in order to see small simple churches planted in people's homes throughout this barrio and Buenos Aires as a whole.

Some things our team will be doing:

  • Prayer Walking
  • Literature Distribution - Teams will distribute tracts, the Gospel of John, New Testaments, and other Christian literature, in the community and especially at the local train station.
  • Street Evangelism - Our team and others will work towards engaging people in order to share Christ with them and to work towards starting a church in Coghlan.
  • Evangelistic Events - Our team will offer at least one evangelistic event on their stay. The event will be based on our team's gifts and the community make-up, but could include sports camps, Vacation Bible Schools, food fairs, music, health clinics, soccer, etc.
